October book club selection...

AMERICAN NATIONS
a history of the eleven regional cultures of North America

by Colin Woodward

A history of North America's eleven rival cultural regions challenges popular perceptions about the red state-blue state conflict, tracing lingering tensions stemming from disparate intranational values that have shaped every major event in history. (NoveList)

Kirkus: /* Starred Review */ Forget about the United States and Canada. The true nations of North America, writes historian and Christian Science Monitor foreign correspondent Woodard (The Republic of Pirates, 2007, etc.), have little to do with those artificialities. Borrowing fruitful notions from Joel Garreau's Nine Nations of North America (1981) and David Hackett Fischer's Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in North America (1989), Woodard traces the differences in America's regions to cultural, ethnic, religious and political differences among various strains of settlers, many of them long in play back in the British Isles. What he calls The Midlands, for instance, extends from the central Atlantic Seaboard deep into the Great Plains, encircling "Yankeedom" by taking in the southern tier of east-central Canada. These regions are the historical purview of, respectively, the Quakers of the English Midlands and the Puritans of England's eastern coast, with their distinct views of human nature and how government had to be organized to respond to it. Some of his "eleven stateless nations of North America" descend from these two regions, representing the old divide between moderate conservatism, with its "middle-class ethos and considerable respect for intellectual achievement," and moderate liberalism, with its view that "society should be organized to benefit ordinary people." Other regions, though, are the product of an English elite that mistrusted any government that presumed to tell them what to do, even though they descended from feudalism. Behold, then, the South, both the aristocratic piedmont of Virginia and North Carolina and the hardscrabble, God-haunted, fearful Deep South. The author connects these regional differences to deep divisions in American life, noting that the old struggle between those moderate forces has been supplanted by the rise of that Deep South, perfected in the 2000 election, when it "established simultaneous control over the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives for the first time in forty-six years."Woodard offers a fascinating way to parse American (writ large) politics and history in this excellent book. (Kirkus Reviews, September 1, 2011)

Fall Journaling

The Journal Group meets tomorrow, the 14th, at 7pm.
  • When the colors of autumn are in full splendor, do you notice an electrifying feeling in the air? Do the colors saturating the atmosphere have an impact on your mood or outlook? If so, how would you  describe it?
  •  Write about one of the five senses (related to your autumn experience):
    • The smells of autumn
    • The sights of autumn
    •  The sounds of autumn
    • The touch of autumn
    • The tastes of autumn

  •  What is your favorite fall memory? Write about it.  Be sure to tell who it involved, what happened, when it happened, where it occurred, and why it is a favorite memory?
  • What are three experiences that you enjoy most about the fall season? Is it the colors? Cooler  temperatures? Kids going back to school? Pick three random things and write about them. If that gets you going and you want to write about more, have at it.
  • What is your favorite fall holiday?  Why?  How does your family celebrate this holiday?
  • What is your favorite fall activity?  Why?
  • What is your favorite food made from apples?

This is a drop-in group that welcomes all new members... no commitment, but we think you'll be addicted to journaling! Call Liza for more information, 208.612.8462

Why do we do Makerspaces?
We do it because it gives people of all ages a place for self-directed learning by experimentation with individual idea development and conception. We encourage all participants to be in control of their own life-long-learning goals.

In our Wednesday Night Event series, we have saved the elusive 5th Wednesdays for Adult Makerspace

On April 29 at 7pm, we are pleased and excited to make something pretty great from a everyday composition notebook. These personalized journals* can be made from paper or fabric and can be embellished as much or as little as you like. It's really all about you and what you feel like making... we're giving you a chance to MAKE!

Samples are available at the 3rd Floor desk, and that's also where you can pre-register for this Adult** Makerspace program. If you have questions, please call the Library 612-8462 or email jhentzen@ifpl.org and we will do our best to answer all of your questions and concerns.

*you aren't "required" to make a journal. These books make great planners or calendars. Some of us have even decorated and spruced up our Book Nerd reading logs too...

journal group meets April 8 @7pm

At journal group on April 8, we will focus on the HERE AND NOW… so I ask you:

What's happening NOW?
1. write one word over and over... fill up the page with this word--except for two places on the page. in one space, write the definition; and the in the other space, write why you chose that word for this page.

2. what was the absolute best thing you did today?

3. what about today totally sucked?

4. look down at your feet… what’s on them, why, what do you think about what you see down there?

5. find a picture of yourself and glue it in your journal, and write about the picture--where were you, why were you there, who was with you, how were you feeling at the time, and how do you feel about this picture now.

6. where have you lived before making your home in Idaho Falls? which was your favorite place--why? which was your least favorite place--why? And what lead you to where you are living now?

7. what is in your purse/wallet? list everything that is in there... and any thoughts you have about it

8. drizzle a little of whatever you're eating and/or drinking on a new page... write about it.

9. look outside and describe what “today” looks like out of your window.

10. think about all of the stuff you know now… what would you say to your 16 year old self, if you could get a letter to her/him?

11. turn on your favorite music, set a timer for 20 minutes, and fill a page in your journal with whatever, however you’re inspired.

12. journal about what you ate, where you went and who you went with for lunch today.

13. what book are you reading? why did you choose it? where did you get the book? are you enjoying it? how would you describe it to someone else?

14. today you were given $1,000, 000 and instructions to spend it in 30 days… what would you do with all of the money?

15. stop what you’re doing at 8:00pm today, and journal about it.

16. using the day of the week in which you're writing (i.e., Monday) write something that happened to you that using the letters in the day (i.e., M O N D A Y) as the first letter of the word you're journaling about. For example:

· M= Mornings are usually rough, but today was especially rough because...

· O= Oatmeal was what I had for breakfast. And today, it was really good...

· N= No one else was a awake when I got up, and it was peaceful this morning...

· D= Dogs are always happy to see you. This morning...

· A= Answering a question with a vague answer kind of makes me crazy...

· Y= You never know who you will see during the day, and how it will effect your mindset. Today I saw...

Journal group is open to all writers and artists... we hope you'll come and join our group!
